What better way than to start with our bodies largest organ, the skin, after all it is what we see first. The rise in the number of people opting for a healthier alternative has meant that natural skincare products are very much in the forefront of the anti aging battle.

This artIcle will aim to look further into some of the often stated benefits, what to look out for when making a purchase, some ingredients you should definitely avoid and, the ones that ought to be included.

Many of today’s publications directed at women are littered with smiling, youthful looking celebrities who freely dispense their own opinions and promote the sponsors natural skincare products as the next best thing.

But, while many of us are taken in by this form of clever marketing we should stop and think a little and ask ourselves questions like are these really the best products, or can I find a better alternative elsewhere.

It’s not always even a cost issue, but  knowing that we have made the right choices and are getting the most bang for our bucks, as they say.

Not all of us are swayed by such a persuasive sales pitch and I find great pleasure in seeking out those smaller companies who are quietly working away at producing some fine creams, lotions, face masks and moisturizers that give more than satisfactory results.

If we opt for natural skincare we need to feel that any product we have chosen is enriched with active ingredients of natural origin. Surely then we have given ourselves a beneficial boost that shows positive results, even if those results are measured over time.

I should however insert a note of caution, when a product is supposedly labeled as natural it may still contain substances that are anything but. Such chemicals can have zero benefit and  even be potentially harmful.

Forewarned is forearmed and whilst it’s impossible to list every single one here, the ones which come to mind include Alcohols and Parabens. Without going into long sounding names for these chemical compounds, the latter is often used as a preservative in skin products but it’s sometimes blamed for causing skin rashes and allergic reactions.

Not something we expect. Alcohols differ slightly in their properties but ones like methanol do crop up in some products. Their overall effect on our skin can lead to irritation and drying. Which leads us nicely into what ingredients should be present in natural skincare products.

Again I’ll concentrate on just a couple of them as these are two of the most important ones.

Phytessence Wakame is a natural sea kelp which is found naturally in Japan. While being an edible food it’s also full of vitamins and minerals and modern techniques of processing it means it possible to extract all the goodness.

Such extracts are then added to facial products for best effect, so keep a look out for this one. The other natural substance is Cynergy TK which contains keratin, a bodily protein that plays a vital part in healthy looking skin.

What some studies have shown is that it stimulates collagen and elastin production, both of immense benefit to any skincare regimen.

So, we have touched upon some of the points to consider when we are looking at products and their related benefits, or lack of. No one doubts that natural skincare is a bigger subject that deserves more personal research and I hope it stirs you into taking a second look, as your skin will reward you.
